        <para>There are some locations in <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> that, for security reasons, can't be shared directly using the Share with menu.  One example is if you attempt to share an entire drive such as drive C on your computer (sometimes referred to as the <newTerm>root</newTerm> of a drive), or system folders (including the Users and <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> folders).</para>
        <para>To share these locations, you must use Advanced sharing instead. In general, however, we don't recommend sharing your entire drive or <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> system folders.</para>

        <title>Introducing homegroups: easy sharing at home</title>
        <para> The easiest way to share files on a home <glossaryEntryLink targetVerification="false"><linkText>network</linkText><uri href="mshelp://windows/?id=1aae1bad-f114-4f57-bc64-9c9c7a7b273c#gtmt_network_def"><summary>View definition</summary></uri></glossaryEntryLink> is to create or join a homegroup. What's a homegroup? It's a collection of PCs that  share pictures, music, videos, documents, and even printers. A computer must be running <notLocalizable>Windows 7</notLocalizable> to participate in a homegroup.</para>
        <para>When setting up or joining a homegroup, you tell <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> which folders or libraries to share—and which to leave private. <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> then works behind the scenes to  toggle between the appropriate settings. Other people can't change the files you share unless you give them permission. You can also protect your homegroup with a password, which you can change at any time.</para>
        <para>Homegroups are available in all <notLocalizable>Windows 7</notLocalizable> editions. However, in the Home Basic and Starter editions, you can only join a homegroup, not create one. Computers that belong to a <glossaryEntryLink><linkText>domain</linkText><uri href="mshelp://windows/?id=d373ac43-ecac-43bb-884a-e78e6e2c7b7a#gtmt_domain_def"><summary>View definition</summary></uri></glossaryEntryLink> can join a homegroup, but they can't share files. They can only access files shared by others.</para>

        <title>Sharing with everybody, somebody—or nobody</title>
        <para>Homegroups offer a fast and convenient way to automatically share music, pictures, and more. But what about files and folders that aren't automatically shared? Or what do you do when you're at the office?</para>

        <para>The Public folders are handy if you want to temporarily share a document or other file with several people.  It's also a handy way to keep track of what you're sharing with others; if it's in the folder, it's shared.</para>
        <para>The downside? You can't restrict people to just seeing some files in the Public folder.  It's all or nothing.  Also, you can't fine-tune permissions. But if these aren't important considerations, then Public folders offer a convenient, alternative way to share.</para>
