<maml:title>Roles</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>A server role is a set of software programs that, when installed and configured correctly, allows a computer to perform a specific function for multiple users or other computers within a network. Generally speaking, roles share the following characteristics:</maml:para>

<maml:list class="unordered">
<maml:listItem>
<maml:para>They describe the primary function, purpose, or use of a computer. A specific computer can be dedicated to perform a single role that is heavily used in the enterprise, or may perform multiple roles if each role is only lightly used in the enterprise.</maml:para>
</maml:listItem>

<maml:listItem>
<maml:para>They provide users throughout an organization access to resources managed by other computers, such as Web sites, printers, or files stored on different computers. </maml:para>
</maml:listItem>

<maml:listItem>
<maml:para>They typically include their own databases, which can queue user or computer requests, or record information about network users and computers that relates to the role. For example, Active Directory Domain Services includes a database for storing the names and hierarchical relationships of all computers in a network.</maml:para>
</maml:listItem>

<maml:listItem>
<maml:para>As soon as they are installed and configured correctly, roles are designed to function automatically, allowing the computers on which they are installed to perform prescribed tasks with limited user intervention.</maml:para>
</maml:listItem>
</maml:list>
</maml:introduction></maml:section>

<maml:section>
<maml:title>Role services</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>Role services are software programs that provide the functionality of a role. When you install a role, you can choose which role services the role will provide for other users and computers in your enterprise. Some roles, such as DNS Server, have only a single function, and therefore do not have available role services. Other roles, such as Remote Desktop Services, have several role services that can be installed, depending on the remote computing needs of your enterprise.</maml:para>

<maml:para>You can consider a role as a grouping of closely related, complementary role services, for which, most of the time, installing the role means installing one or more of its role services.</maml:para>
</maml:introduction></maml:section>

<maml:section>
<maml:title>Features</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>Features are software programs that, although they are not directly parts of roles, can support or augment the functionality of one or more roles, or improve the functionality of the whole server, regardless of which roles are installed. For example, the Failover Clustering feature augments the functionality of other roles, such as File Services and DHCP Server, by enabling them to join server clusters for increased redundancy and improved performance. Another feature, Telnet Client, lets you communicate remotely with a telnet server over a network connection, functionality which enhances the communication options of the whole server.</maml:para>

<maml:title>What is Server Manager?</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>Server Manager is an expanded Microsoft Management Console (MMC) that lets you view and manage most of the information and tools that affect your server's productivity.</maml:para>

<maml:para>Server Manager makes server administration more efficient by allowing administrators to do the following by using a single tool:</maml:para>

<maml:list class="unordered">
<maml:listItem>
<maml:para>Initial Configuration Tasks. After you have completed the installation of Windows Server 2008 R2, and before you deploy the new server in your enterprise, some configuration is required to identify the computer to other computing resources on the network, secure the computer, activate Windows, and customize the computer by adding server roles and features.</maml:para>

<maml:para>You can complete these tasks by using commands in the Initial Configuration Tasks window that opens immediately after the operating system installation is complete.</maml:para>

<maml:para>Easy-to-use wizards that install or remove roles, role services, and features on the server. Administrators no longer have to use Add or Remove Windows Components to install or configure server roles, or worry about missing an important software program during installation or removal of roles or features. Multiple roles, role services, or features can be installed or removed in a single session by using a Server Manager wizard. Simple and informative wizards have eliminated the guesswork.</maml:para>
