        <newTerm>Sleep</newTerm> is a power-saving state that allows a computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. <newTerm>Hibernation</newTerm> is a power-saving state designed primarily for laptops. While sleep puts your work and settings in memory and draws a small amount of power, hibernation puts your open documents and programs on your hard disk, and then turns off your computer. Of all the power-saving states in <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable>, hibernation uses the least amount of power. On a laptop, use hibernation when you know that you won’t use your laptop for an extended period and won't have an opportunity to charge the battery during that time.</para>
      <para>
        <newTerm>Hybrid sleep</newTerm> is designed primarily for desktop computers. Hybrid sleep is a combination of sleep and hibernate—it puts any open documents and programs in memory and on your hard disk, and then puts your computer into a low-power state so that you can quickly resume your work. That way, if a power failure occurs, <notLocalizable>Windows</notLocalizable> can restore your work from your hard disk. When hybrid sleep is turned on, putting your computer into sleep automatically puts your computer into hybrid sleep. Hybrid sleep is typically turned on by default on desktop computers.</para>

The remaining charge on your battery might be very low, or your battery might not be holding a charge very long. By

default, the low-battery notification appears when the charge

reaches 10 percent, and a reserve battery warning appears when the charge reaches 7 percent. When the battery charge reaches 5 percent, you're at the critical-battery level, and your laptop goes into hibernation. On a laptop with an older battery that has less storage capacity, a low-battery notification at 10 percent charge and the reserve battery warning at 7 percent charge might not give you enough time to

save your work and log off. In this case, consider increasing the percentage of the Low and Reserve battery level setting.</para>

      <leadInPhrase class="other">What you use the laptop for.</leadInPhrase> Because some activities drain the battery faster than others (for example, watching a DVD consumes more power than reading and writing e‑mail), alternating between activities that have significantly different power requirements changes the rate at which your laptop uses battery power. This can vary the estimate of how much battery charge remains.</para>
    <para>
      <leadInPhrase class="other">Battery hardware and sensor circuitry.</leadInPhrase> Newer, "smart" batteries are equipped with circuitry that calculates the measurements of charge remaining and reports the information to the battery meter. <para>Most laptops use lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Like most batteries, lithium-ion batteries gradually lose their capacity to store energy as they age, whether or not you charge them. Over time, this change in storage capacity significantly affects the accuracy of the battery meter. If you frequently drain a lithium-ion battery, and then recharge it, it can quickly lose its ability to hold a charge, which affects the accuracy of the battery meter. The practice of completely draining the battery, and then fully charging it, is advice that applied to nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries and, to a lesser extent, nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries last longer if you charge them often, a little at a time, to maintain a minimum charge of about 40 percent capacity.</para>
