However, a firewall running on each  computer on your network can help control the spread of worms.</para>

Allowing a program to communicate through a firewall (sometimes called <newTerm>unblocking</newTerm>) is like punching a hole in the firewall.</para>
    <para>Each time you open a port or allow a program to communicate through a firewall, your computer becomes a bit less secure. The more allowed programs or open ports your firewall has, the more opportunities there are for hackers or malicious software to use one of those openings to spread a <glossaryEntryLink targetVerification="false"><linkText>worm</linkText><uri href="mshelp://windows/?id=33a9d478-ea9c-4bf3-83da-96819d601bf2#gtmt_worm_def"><summary>View definition</summary></uri></glossaryEntryLink>, access your files, or use your computer to spread <glossaryEntryLink targetVerification="false"><linkText>malicious software</linkText><uri href="mshelp://windows/?id=85b8c3e6-28c4-464d-b883-7764d16f54a2#gtmt_malicious_software_def"><summary>View definition</summary></uri></glossaryEntryLink> to others.</para>
    <para>It's generally safer to add a program to the list of allowed programs than to open a port. If you open a port, it stays open until you close it, whether or not a program is using it. If you add a program to the list of allowed programs, the "hole" is open only when needed for a particular communication.</para>
