<maml:para>You can use a fax server to configure fax devices to enable the users in your network to send and receive faxes. On a computer running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you must install the Fax Server role to create a fax server, install the Fax service, and install Fax Service Manager. (The Fax Server role is available from Server Manager.)</maml:para>

After you install the Fax Server role, you can access Fax Service Manager from Server Manager by clicking <maml:ui>Roles</maml:ui>, clicking <maml:ui>Fax Server</maml:ui>, and then clicking <maml:ui>Fax</maml:ui>. You can also access this tool by adding it to an MMC console.</maml:para>

On a fax server, you can use Windows Fax and Scan to send faxes, add accounts, and to monitor the incoming fax queue, the inbox, and the outbox. Users who are using computers running Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, and certain versions of Windows 7 can use this feature to send faxes and configure fax receipts.</maml:para>

<maml:title>Hardware and software considerations</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>The Fax Server role is available in all editions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, except for Windows Web Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-Based Systems. In addition, the Fax Service Manager snap-in is not available for the Server Core installation option of Windows Server 2008 R2.</maml:para>
<maml:para>When you upgrade a fax server from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the Fax Server role will be automatically installed as part of the upgrade. However, only certain settings will be maintained during the upgrade. For example, you must reconfigure fax sharing. In addition, any settings on the <maml:ui>Security</maml:ui> tab in the <maml:ui>Properties</maml:ui> dialog box of Fax Service Manager will revert to the default settings. Also, fax user accounts will not be created—you must create them manually. For more information, see the Fax Service Manager Help (at <maml:ui>Run</maml:ui>, type: <maml:userInput>HH faxcons.chm</maml:userInput>).</maml:para>


<maml:alertSet class="important"><maml:title>Important </maml:title><maml:para>If you are using a computer running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V installed, you cannot use the Fax Server role within the virtualized environment. The Fax Server role requires access to at least one physical modem device and Hyper-V does not provide physical access to COM ports. <maml:title>Installing the Fax Server role</maml:title><maml:introduction>
<maml:para>To create a fax server, you must install the Fax Server role. This installs the Fax Server role page, Fax Service Manager, Windows Fax and Scan, the Fax service, and the fax printer.</maml:para>
<maml:para>Before you begin installing the Fax Server role, make sure that any modem devices you need have been installed on the server. If you plan to install a new modem device, you can save time by installing it before you set up the Fax Server role.
We recommend that you install the Fax Server role locally and not by using a Remote Desktop connection. You can install the Fax Server role remotely, but you need to make sure that local resource sharing is turned off.

<maml:para>After you have the Fax Server role installed, you can use Fax Service Manager to manage a fax server. To open Fax Service Manager using Server Manager, click <maml:ui>Start</maml:ui>, click <maml:ui>Server Manager</maml:ui>, double-click <maml:ui>Roles</maml:ui>, and then double-click <maml:ui>Fax</maml:ui>. Or, to open Fax Service Manager, click <maml:ui>Start</maml:ui>, click <maml:ui>Administrative Tools</maml:ui>, and then click <maml:ui>Fax Service Manager</maml:ui>.</maml:para>

<maml:para>You can also access Fax Service Manager by adding the snap-in to an MMC console. Use this method if you want to use the console to manage a fax server remotely.
